{"id":8879,"date":"2025-11-07T14:28:39","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T13:28:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spiritualbish.com\/?p=8879"},"modified":"2025-11-07T15:43:58","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T14:43:58","slug":"stop-telling-people-to-regulate-their-fcking-nervous-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spiritualbish.com\/pl\/stop-telling-people-to-regulate-their-fcking-nervous-system\/","title":{"rendered":"STOP Telling People To Regulate Their F*cking Nervous System!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"8879\" class=\"elementor elementor-8879\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-662cb2f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no\" data-id=\"662cb2f\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-c17e947\" data-id=\"c17e947\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-405f636 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"405f636\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"p2\">\u00a0<\/p><hr \/><h3><b>When Calm Becomes the New Colonizer&#8230;<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p1\"><i>(A somatic love letter to the misunderstood nervous system)<\/i><\/p><p class=\"p1\">Now if you want, I invite you to take a collective exhale with me.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Yes, I know \u2014 I\u2019m being provocative.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s on purpose.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Not to dismiss the importance of regulation, but to slice through the tidal wave of \u201cjust regulate\u201d messaging flooding the healing, therapy, and spiritual world right now.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Because while I\u2019m genuinely thrilled that the body and the nervous system are finally being recognized as essential to healing \u2014 we also need to name what\u2019s being lost in translation.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Regulation matters.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">But it\u2019s not one-size-fits-all.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">And it\u2019s not always what your system needs.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Let\u2019s get honest about when regulation supports healing \u2014 and when it becomes a bandaid.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">When it soothes, and when it silences.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">When it\u2019s an act of love \u2014 and when it\u2019s just another way to gaslight our own aliveness back into \u201cacceptable\u201d shapes.<\/p><hr \/><h3><b>When Calm Becomes Compliance<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p1\">In the age of self-optimization, \u201cregulate your nervous system\u201d has become the new gospel.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It sounds empowering \u2014 but regulate <i>into what<\/i>, and for <i>whose comfort<\/i>?<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Because when we tell people to \u201cbe calm\u201d without naming oppression, relational trauma, or collective grief and rage \u2014 what we\u2019re really saying is:<\/p><p class=\"p1\">please make yourself easier to be around.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">We\u2019re asking bodies to <i>conform<\/i>, not <i>transform<\/i>.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">To appease, not to express.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">To endure the systems that made them \u201cdysregulated\u201d in the first place.<\/p><hr \/><h3><b>The Weaponization of \u2018Dysregulation\u2019<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p1\">\u201cTake a deep breath.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"p1\">\u201cBe calm.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"p1\">\u201cYou\u2019re just dysregulated.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Helpful? Sometimes.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">But when those are the only tools in the box, they start to function like a muzzle.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Not every raised voice is dysregulation.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Not every trembling body is trauma.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Sometimes it\u2019s truth trying to move through \u2014 the body remembering the instinctual, wild, fierce, power or the animal body.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">When \u201cregulation\u201d becomes code for repression, we lose touch with the wild intelligence of the nervous system \u2014 its impulse to shake, cry, roar, run, rest, push, hug, stomp, \u00a0and love.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Regulation isn\u2019t liberation.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s management.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">And management isn\u2019t healing.<\/p><hr \/><h3><b>We\u2019ve Started Worshipping Calm<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p1\">Somewhere along the way, \u201cregulated\u201d became synonymous with \u201ccalm.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"p1\">We\u2019ve started worshipping the parasympathetic and banishing the sympathetic \u2014 like it\u2019s a naughty child.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">But safety isn\u2019t stillness.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Aliveness is movement.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The body is rhythm, expansion, contraction, pulse.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Our nervous system \u00a0was never meant to stay calm \u2014 \u00a0we are meant to <i>move.\u00a0<\/i><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><i>Movement and sensation are our first language, until we are socialised to sit still and be quiet.<\/i><\/p><p class=\"p1\">Real regulation is not the absence of charge; it\u2019s the capacity to flow between activation and rest without losing connection to Self, to others, and the world around us. It&#8217;s being IN RELATIONSHIP, not numb and seperate.<\/p><hr \/><h3><b>Our Parts Don\u2019t Like Being Told What to Do<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p3\">And neither does our nervous system.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">When someone says <i>\u201cjust regulate,\u201d<\/i> the parts of us that may still \u00a0hold pain, anger, grief, or terror \u2014 they don\u2019t feel seen.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It\u2019s like re-enacting the original trauma: the moment we learned our bigness was <i>too much,<\/i> our sadness <i>too sensitive,<\/i> our rage <i>unsafe.<\/i><\/p><p class=\"p3\">These parts are not problems to fix \u2014 they\u2019re intelligent protectors and vulnerable younger parts \u00a0that adapted and \u00a0shaped themselves to keep us alive, to stay safe, conencted, to belong.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">As one of my mentors, <span class=\"s2\"><b>Frank Anderson<\/b><\/span>, teaches \u2014 healing isn\u2019t about managing or calming parts, but <span class=\"s2\"><b>embodying their shape.<\/b><\/span><\/p><p class=\"p3\">Letting them move, sound, tremble, breathe, and be witnessed.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Sometimes that means letting the inner child cry, the inner protector stomp, the inner warrior roar.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It can feel terrifying, especially for therapists, practitioners, coaches, or healers whose own protector parts equate control with safety and the unknown as &#8220;dangerous&#8221; or big emotions as &#8220;dysregualtion&#8221; that can be destabilizing. But continuing to suppress, avoid, and &#8220;regualte&#8221; these parts doesn&#8217;t make them go away, they are still there waiting to be heard, felt and witnessed.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Our freedom doesn\u2019t live in calm and stillness \u2014 it lives in <span class=\"s2\"><b>range.<\/b><\/span><\/p><p class=\"p3\">In letting the full ecosystem of the body \u2014 every part, every impulse and emotion \u2014 be met with curiosity and compassion.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Because when our parts are allowed to express authentically, our nervous system remembers how to flow. It knows how to complete what never got to.<\/p><h3><b>The Stress Response Cycle<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p1\">Every stress follows a natural arc:<\/p><p class=\"p4\"><b>activation \u2192 mobilization \u2192 deactivation\u00a0<\/b><b>\u2192\u00a0<\/b><b>restoration.<\/b><\/p><p class=\"p1\">When that cycle completes, we return to connection.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">When it doesn\u2019t, the charge of stress becomes chronic.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">What interrupts completion?<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Cognitive override.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Cultural conditioning.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Lack of safety.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">No time, no support.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Tools used to manage instead of release.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">We start coping instead of completing.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Calming instead of connecting.<\/p><hr \/><h3><b>When Healing Tools Become Avoidance<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p1\">Meditation can deepen dissociation when stillness feels unsafe.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Yoga can suppress discharge when driven by perfectionism.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Talk therapy can circle in story without releasing physiology.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Massage can soothe tissues while the charge remains.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">These aren\u2019t \u201cbad.\u201d They\u2019re just incomplete when used to <i>control<\/i> rather than <i>listen.<\/i><\/p><p class=\"p1\">Stillness before completion is suppression.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Calmness before movement is control.<\/p><hr \/><h3><b>True Regulation Is Flow<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p1\">Like nature, we pulse. We rise and fall.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">True wellness isn\u2019t control \u2014 it\u2019s capacity.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Regulation is not about staying calm while the world burns.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s about expanding your capacity to be with what\u2019s real.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">To rest.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">To rage.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">To cry.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">To create.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">To move energy through without getting stuck.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The goal isn\u2019t calm.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s connection, being able to receive and express, and having safe enough spaces and faces to do so.<\/p><hr \/><h3><b>The Body\u2019s Innate Intelligence<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p1\">When the body trembles, shakes, or cries \u2014 it\u2019s not broken.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s <i>completing.<\/i><\/p><p class=\"p1\">This is <span class=\"s1\"><b>somatic stress release<\/b><\/span> \u2014 the body finishing what it never had time, safety, or permission to process before.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Your body knows what to do.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Your nervous system is not malfunctioning \u2014 it\u2019s <i>magnificent.<\/i><\/p><p class=\"p1\">It remembers how to return to balance, when we stop interrupting it with control and start listening to its impulses: crying, laughing, sighing, shaking, and finding true rest and restoration.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Because healing isn\u2019t about doing something <i>to<\/i> the body.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s about remembering that the body already knows.<\/p><hr \/><h3><b>Regulation as Embodied Activism<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p1\">When calmness is demanded by oppressive systems \u2014<\/p><p class=\"p1\">capitalism, patriarchy, white supremacy, extractive spirituality \u2014<\/p><p class=\"p1\">nervous system work becomes activism.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Because your rage is wisdom.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Your tears are sacred.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Your trembling is truth.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Your movement is medicine.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">This is somatic liberation \u2014<\/p><p class=\"p1\">the body reclaiming its right to feel, express, and belong.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Healing is not compliance.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s rebellion through reconnection<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Reconnection to your body intelligence<\/p><p class=\"p1\">to your hearts desires and what matters most to you<\/p><p class=\"p1\">to your inner power, passion, pleasure and purpose<\/p><p class=\"p1\">to community and people who share the same values where you can belong\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">to nature as our original mama<\/p><p class=\"p1\">to the truth that we are all inter-connected and no one is free until we are all free, the wellbeing of all living beings.<\/p><hr \/><h3><b>The Resilience Toolkit: A Somatic Ritual by Nkem Ndefo<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p1\">One of my mentors, <span class=\"s1\"><b>Nkem Ndefo<\/b><\/span>, creator of <i>The Resilience Toolkit<\/i>, offers a simple yet powerful way to restore somatic agency:<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Pause and check in:<\/p><ul><li><p class=\"p1\">How strong is your state right now?<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"p1\">How do you know?<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"p1\">Is your response proportionate to the moment?<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"p1\">Are you carrying more than you need?<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"p1\">Then, connect to your body.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Try gentle self-touch, soft rocking, or orienting your gaze.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Notice if you feel more ease or spaciousness.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">If you do \u2014 it\u2019s not because you \u201ccalmed down.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s because you reconnected.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">This is the essence of true regulation: <span class=\"s1\"><b>relationship, not control.<\/b><\/span><\/p><hr \/><h3><b>The Nervous System Doesn\u2019t Need to Be Regulated \u2014 It Needs to Be Trusted<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p1\">Your body is auto-regulating, self- organising, intelligent.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It doesn\u2019t need to be managed \u2014 it needs permission to do its thing.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">this is somatic intelligence, you dont need to tell your lungs to breath or blood to flow.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Homeostasis, neuroplasticity, healing of cuts \u2014 these aren\u2019t things you <i>make<\/i> happen.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">They are what life does when it\u2019s trusted.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Life wants to move towards life.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">When you plant an acorn into the soil and nurture it, give it all it&#8217;s inherent needs it will grow into a marvellous oak tree on it&#8217;s own &#8211; the same is for us.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"p1\">We are the medicine, your body has all it needs inside to heal, grow, and transform &#8211; when we have enough support and the right conditions, and unfortunately our modern life and everything happening in the world isnt natural or supportive.
